Two schemes run by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council feature the special and the unusual. It was, therefore, quite an achievement for them to achieve a double ‘commended’ notification at the Yorkshire and Humberside Energy Efficiency Awards night at the Sheffield Hilton in July.
It was also cause for celebration for us at Westdale North Ltd, who had nominated our client for both the Council/Local Authority of the Year and the Large Scale Project of the Year awards.
The ERYC and Bridlington project is special because the 100 properties involved in the EWI scheme are timber framed. This means no structural repairs, but ERYC demand thermal efficiency that surpasses that of new build properties.
Standard for EWI is required to give a ‘U’ value of 0.3W/m2K. ERYC require values of 0.15Wm2K, making them twice as efficient. This presented a challenge, and a very unusual product was necessary to meet it.
This particular EWI system uses Alumasc ‘Phenolic’ insulation which is better at insulating for the same thickness as EPS – but is far more expensive. The thickness is 90mm, which is the equivalent to 130mm of EPS insulation.

The Phenolic insulation has a silicone texture in a cream colour, with ArtBrick installed in two colours, a ‘buff’ and ‘red’ for the finish.
The £600k scheme is over a two-year period and is funded almost entirely by ERYC money, supplemented by a small amount of ECO (Energy Company Obligation) funding.
